Stone Chip Repair

February 17, 2016

Keeping your car safe and protecting them from Stone Chips is one of the most difficult things to do, and neigh on impossible. You can keep your vehicle covered at all times even drive slower on the motorway even this wont stop them. All you can do is reduce the chance of them by monitoring how you drive and take care of your car. But even if you were as vigulent over your automobile as you could be, this still wont stop someone driving over a stone in front of you and cant prevent the stone being thrown back in your direction.

No one wants a stone chip on his or her car especially if its new or just been cleaned and polished. So if you have just seen a chip on your vehicle you should know the possible options you can choose for the repair.

This type of stone chip repair is the more basic type of the three you could choose and is also the most cost effective. The stone chip in question is first cleaned and dried then a protective solution is then applied which prevents rust. Once dried a layer of primer is added followed by paint then lacquer. All these layers from the protective solution up to the lacquer are applied using a fine brush with no spray work. A basic Stone Chip Repair can be completed within 1 hour at your home or place of work. The finish is not a perfect one and can be seen on closer inspection. But for the price you pay and considering you could get another stone chip from driving around the corner well worth the money.

Local Respray

This is a more involved process that requires the chip to be flattened off then filled. Once dried, a primer is added, followed by the paint then lacquer. Its very similar to the method above but all processes are applied using a HVLP spray gun. The advantage of this is that you can blend in the paint and lacquer, which gives a seamless finish that is not noticeable to the naked eye even at closer inspection. The cost for this type of stone chip repair is greater than the method above but the results are better and this can be carried out at your home or place of work. The only down side is that you can only really have localised resprays on bumpers, wings and doors and not bonnets, the area is just to large to blend in.

Panel Respray

This would be the most costly of the three. It involves the whole panel being resprayed. This technique is only really carried out in body shops for which you would have to take your car to. The results are like new but considering it’s only a stone chip is it really worth the cost to spray your whole panel? I would say yes if it’s completely pebble dashed with them but just for the odd few a complete waste of money.

So if you are thinking of a stone chip repair think about the possible repair methods and what one is right for you.
